Is there a cancellation fee?
Nope, none at all. Our residency program is a month-to-month flow. If you won’t need the space for a few months, that’s fine, just don’t pay for a membership for those months. Whenever you’re ready to use The Xove again, you’re welcome to pay for another monthly membership, at no additional cost, or book one of our rooms on an hourly basis, as you need.
Can I get a refund on my membership?Memberships are non-refundable.Memberships are also non-transferable in that they cannot be transferred to another artist, or transferred to another month. Why is the Build | Nurture residency dedicated to Black, Indigenous, women of colour in music? The Xove itself was created & founded by Xolisa Jerome, a Toronto based emcee, singer & producer who identifies as a Black woman herself. In her own lived experience as a professional artist over the past 7+ years recording, touring, performing locally & producing content as an independent artist, it’s become clear the unique obstacles and challenges that are still very much present for artists of colour, especially women identified music artists - making it additionally challenging & complex in an industry that already holds its own challenges for independent music artists as it is. The Xove has been & continues to be both a solution & a resource for artists who face similar challenges & complexities in being women & in being Black women & being women of colour period. Creating accessibility & opportunity for the minority groups that face these unique challenges within the music industry allows us to give back & add even just one option for this unique group of artists to consider, as they navigate their careers & look for safe spaces to create out of. We’re proud to be another option, another resource, another solution to strengthening this city’s music infrastructure & taking up space alongside the incredible women who choose to express & build their lives in & around music.
What if I don’t identify as a woman of colour? Does that mean I cannot become a member of Build | Nurture?
The core mission of the Build | Nurture residency is to be a point of accessibility exclusively for women of colour in music. Those who do not identify with this group are & will continue to be welcomed to utilize The Xove on a non-member/non-residency basis. Please email us to inquire about our regular hourly studio rates.
Is The Xove a LGBTQ2+ safe space?Yes & it always will be.
Do I really have full access to the studio every month? Even to record??!You sure do! We’ve come to realize very quickly that our studio is not a traditional music studio & with that understanding, we’ve had to develop a solution that compliments our unique structure, one that allows for us to keep our doors open, while providing an affordable, efficient & high quality experience that actually makes sense for an artist who is dedicated to building a foundation upon their music. The cost of recording time alone is one of the most expensive costs an independent artist will face. Paying for recording time PLUS recording in a space that is welcoming, safe, high quality, professional & cares about your recording experience, is a whole other story & that’s just recording alone. Recording is just one aspect of a music artists’ foundation. Providing full access to our songwriting room, meeting room, rehearsal room & live performance space in addition to our recording studio, truly allows artists in this residency an opportunity to nurture the different aspects of their music career under one roof, as they need, while helping to eliminate that worry of not having the money to do so.
