iii fold [ep]
iii fold [ep]
April 1, 2019
On the helm of the Spring season & the newness that Spring brings forth, TIAYL introduces to us, “III fold”, her 4th self-produced body of work, the first to be released under her newly adapted name, “TIAYL”. This 3-song EP is dedicated to the process of letting go & speaks intimately on TIAYL’s personal lessons learnt on letting go, experienced over the last year (2018).
TIAYL’s production on III fold, is just as rich & luscious in its sonics, as it is raw & penetrating in lyricism & vocal delivery. Once again, TIAYL allows us to sit with what is uncomfortable, what is painful, what is difficult - yet holds & carries us through it all with a sense of resilience & incredible vulnerability.
III fold, speaks on 3 different approaches to letting go that the Toronto native has come to learn, each approach represented in a song:
The EP’s opening number, “Her”, is an acoustic ballad about letting go by choice. “Her” is filled with an explosive burst of harmonics, strings, vocal samples & lo-fi happenings, as TIAYL sings candidly on her choice to let go of a friendship that has become toxic over the years. The song itself is a capture of 2 conversations being had simultaneously. The first, between TIAYL & the “her” in question with lyrics, “I let you go and all that you have done to hurt me”. The second, a conversation, or confession of sorts, between TIAYL & God, with lyrics, “And I know you been tryna show me some thangs, for quite sometime…and I know I haven’t trusted you.”
After a climatic intro, listeners are brought to rest on “1139”, a soulful, melodic lullaby that stands on its own 2 feet as a testimony to letting go in surrender to Spirit, to the Universe, to the Creator. TIAYL’s vocals churn out a beautifully, haunting mix of pain & peace in letting go of control & surrendering to patience. With retro guitar strokes & a sturdy, steady, clock-like, drum pattern that anchors the song beneath TIAYL’s raw vocals, listeners are rocked back & forth carefully, lovingly, in the warmth of TIAYL’s voice & production.
To close the EP, TIAYL delivers to us “IDK” which gives a heartbreaking glimpse into the thoughts, emotions & ruminations of a person whose loved one has taken their own life. With an ambient fusion of Afro House, Deep House & Caribbean nuances, the lo-fi atmospheric “IDK” brilliantly ups the tempo of III fold & sends listeners on a cosmic journey that hopes for a peace found for this departed spirit, while challenging their choice of suicide in blatantly asking, “Is peace really yours, now?”
Individually, each song on III fold brings forth its very own atmospheric pull, aura & energy. As a whole, the listening experience is one that is short in counted measure, yet spans a lifetime in its introspective lyricism, gritty-smooth vocal delivery & intricate production. A collection of unique experience, strung together delicately in calculated spontaneity & intentional inward journeying.
TRUST IN ALL YOUR LIGHT
With a voice that weaves together the rawness of our reality and a smoothness that only she can exude - TIAYL (formally performing under her birth name Xolisa) is a force, all within herself, passionately dedicated to celebrating our individual and collective healing - with an unapologetic emphasis on the continued upward ascension and beauty of Black women and men.
TIAYL delivers her message of love by any means necessary - lyrically potent as singer, emcee, songwriter and producer, creating music that is a juxtaposition in itself.
Her songwriting is strikingly raw, uncut and unfiltered, yet her production possesses a deeply nurturing and instinctive groove, together creating a sound that invites (or at time commands) listeners to face themselves and all their truths, while being comforted and held along the way. Flowing intuitively between Soul, Neo-Soul, Hip Hop and Afro-House, TIAYL's music has a magical way of uprooting our deepest hurts, fears and traumas and guiding us to a place where we can grant ourselves the permission to sit with those seeds in love - despite the discomfort.
TIAYL, which stands for "Trust In All Your Light", personifies her choice to hold herself accountable in believing in her purpose, while simultaneously inspiring others to do just the same, and as the Trinidadian-Canadian songwriter pens us songs dedicated to her name sake, we sit back and experience just who this young woman is, in all her creative abilities.
Bold and gently uplifting.
Standing firm in every ray of her inner being.
To illuminate every corner of this world and shine a light on its people - their crooked places, their dark places, their ugly places, every sunken corner and every unhealed abyss that exists within us - where demons take refuge and where ego thrives on our pain.
To elevate our people through messages that force us, to face us.
TIAYL is here, in all of her light.
