Press Release

September 20, 2019
Toronto

As Toronto begins the transition into its vibrant fall season and enters into the quiet stillness that autumn brings, TIAYL reveals to us the lush rhythms of “Downstream”, the very first soundscape to be released off of her forthcoming self-produced EP, “Sacral”, set to make its way to the rest of the world in early 2020.

“Downstream” is a richly crafted devotional that speaks on an age old ideology of water and its historic use in religious and spiritual practices as a means to cleanse the mind, body and spirit. The single encapsulates the idea of using water as a means to be reborn, transformed, restored and made a new - the idea of starting again with a clean slate. As TIAYL explains, “Downstream was written to express my daily choices to reset and start again - calling upon Creator - Universe - God to wash away all the old and unhealthy habits, mind states and perspectives that weigh me down, allowing those blocks to be washed away, to flow downstream.

It's the idea of surrendering all that doesn't serve us” she continues, “in order to be transformed and to reach new (and healthier) mind states in all areas of our lives - be it within our finances, health, love lives, careers, spiritual journey, etc.

TIAYL’s production on “Downstream” offers a heavy undercurrent of percussion, with deep and surging waves of ambient tones, pads, strings and flowing harmonies that in themselves, often mimic the fluidity of water, at times a part of the song’s inner weavings and other times taking a front and center role to lead the rest of the production into battle. There’s a beautiful sense of power and defiance in the arrangement of sounds that dip and rise in this masterpiece - allowing listeners a true vastness in which to surrender themselves within and be immersed in the cleansing energy of this song.

With this promising first impression of TIAYL’s upcoming “Sacral” EP, we’re filled with anticipation of what’s to come next.

TRUST IN ALL YOUR LIGHT

Pronounced “Tie-yal”

BIO

With a voice that weaves together the rawness of our reality and a smoothness that only she can exude - TIAYL (formally performing under her birth name "Xolisa") is a force, all within herself, passionately dedicated to celebrating our individual and collective healing - with an unapologetic emphasis on the continued upward ascension and beauty of Black women and men.

TIAYL delivers her message of love by any means necessary - lyrically potent as singer, emcee, songwriter and producer, creating music that is a juxtaposition in itself. Her songwriting is strikingly raw, uncut and unfiltered - yet her production possesses a deeply nurturing and instinctive groove, together creating a sound that invites (or at time commands) listeners to face themselves and all their truths, while being comforted and held every step of the way.

Flowing intuitively between Soul, Neo-Soul, Hip Hop and Afro-House, TIAYL's music has a magical way of uprooting our deepest hurts, fears and traumas - while guiding us to a place where we can grant ourselves the permission to sit with those experiences, in love - despite the discomfort.

TIAYL, which stands for "Trust In All Your Light", personifies her choice to hold herself accountable in believing in her purpose, while simultaneously inspiring others to do just the same, and as the Trinidadian-Canadian songwriter pens us songs dedicated to her name sake, we sit back and experience just who this young woman is, in all her creative abilities.

Standing firm in every ray of her inner being to illuminate every corner of this world and shine a light on its people - their crooked places, their dark places, their ugly places, every sunken corner and every unhealed abyss that exists within us .

To elevate our people through messages that force us, to face us.

TIAYL is here, in all of her light.
